    Power Button
Turns power on and off. Wait until the printer stops printing and press the power button down for 2 seconds to power off the printer. Never use a power strip, or surge protector to turn off the printer, as the print head will not be in the proper position. It may be harmful to your printer if you turn the printer off using an external switch. The power light is on when the printer is ready to print. It flashes when the printer is receiving a print job, charging ink, or cleaning the print head. It also flashes when the print head moves to the ink cartridge replacement position.

    Maintenance Button
If your printouts are unexpectedly light, or dots or lines are missing from the image, you may need to clean the print head. This unclogs the nozzles so they can deliver ink properly. Print head cleaning uses ink, so clean it only if quality declines.

To clean the print nozzles, make sure the printer is turned on but not printing, and the Ink-Out light is off. Press and hold the Maintenance button for three seconds. Cleaning takes about 30 seconds, during which the printer makes some noise and the power light flashes. When the cleaning cycle is complete, the power light will stop flashing. A more thorough nozzle cleaning is performed through the printer driver software utilities. This is available only when your printer is connected directly to your computer, not over a network.

    Ink Replacement Button
Press the Ink Replacement button to start the cartridge replacement procedure when the ink light is on or blinking.

Q: Where can I find the printer manual?

A: Your printer software CD-ROM includes an electronic Reference Guide for your printer. The manual is in HTML format, so you need a browser such as Internet Explorer 4.0 or later or Netscape Navigator 4.0 or later to view it. If you are using a different browser, the pages may not display correctly. (A browser is not included on the printer software CD-ROM.)

Q: Which computer interfaces does this printer support?

A: The printer comes with a built in IEEE-1284 parallel port and USB port.

    Return to the index
Q: Is there any difference in printing performance between the parallel and USB interfaces?

A: Yes, USB is the recommended interface for the highest speed. When running Windows 98 or ME the parallel performance will be about equal or a little slower than USB. The design of Windows 2000 and Windows XP (which is based on Windows 2000) has a slower parallel printing performance. USB is the best choice of interfaces and will keep the printer running at full engine speed.

Q: What steps need to be taken when transporting the Printer?

A: If you move your printer some distance, you need to prepare it for transportation in its original box or one of a similar size. To avoid damage, always leave the ink cartridges installed when transporting the printer. Follow these steps:

    1. Turn on the printer and wait until it completes its initialization and stops moving. Then press the power button to turn the printer off.
    2. Unplug the power cord.
    3. Disconnect the printer cable from the printer.
    4. Remove any paper from the printer and remove the paper support.
    5. Open the printer cover. Secure the ink cartridge holder to the printer with tape.

Then close the printer cover. Be sure to remove the tape after installing the printer in its new location.
    6. Push in the output tray extensions and close the tray.
    7. Repack the printer and attachments in the original box using the protective materials that came with it. Be sure to keep the printer level as you move it.

After transporting the printer, remove the tape securing the print head and test your printer. If you notice a decline in print quality, clean the print head. If output is misaligned, align the print head.

When printing from DOS, color printing is not available. You will need to use the control panel of the printer to replace ink cartridges and perform other maintenance functions.

    Return to the index
Q: I installed new ink cartridges and the printer is now doing continuous cleaning cycles. Is there something wrong with my printer?

A: When an ink cartridge is installed into the printer, it will take approximately one minute to charge the ink system and initialize the printer. This initialization is a normal and necessary process. Never turn off the printer until the printer has not moved or made noise for over 5 minutes. If it does not stop, the printer may need service and you should contact Epson technical support for assistance.

    Return to the index
Q: How do I know when the ink cartridges need to be replaced?

A: When the printer's red Error light flashes, an ink cartridge is low on ink. This is a good time to make sure you have a new cartridge handy. When the Error light stays on, the cartridge is empty and will need to be replaced. The Error light also flashes when there is a paper jam so make sure to check your paper before changing the ink cartridge.

You can click on the EPSON Status Monitor to check which cartridge is low or empty. To check your ink supply, do one of the following:

    Windows:
Double-click the printer icon on your taskbar (in the lower right corner of your screen). You see a window showing ink levels. You can also double-click the Ink Monitor icon on the taskbar. The window that appears lets you check ink levels and also order cartridges online. Just click the Buy Now button to launch your web browser.

    Macintosh:
    OS 8.6 to 9.x:
Choose File > Print. Click the ink icon.

    OS X:
    Choose Applications>EPSON Printer Utility>C62 Series>EPSON Status Monitor.

Q: I installed new ink cartridges and the printer is now doing continuous cleaning cycles. Is this normal?

A: When an ink cartridge is installed into the printer, it will take approximately one minute to charge the ink system and initialize the printer. While the ink is charging the power light will flash. Never turn off the printer while the power light is flashing (unless the power light is flashing AND the printer has not moved or made noise for over 5 minutes). This initialization is a normal and necessary process. If the printer initialization does not stop after 5 minutes turn the printer off and contact Epson technical support for assistance.

Q: Can I select the print resolution in the driver software?

A: Rather than selecting the print resolution in the driver, you select the following types of documents and the resolution will be automatically selected depending on the paper type you choose to print on:

    Windows:
  • Draft: For rough drafts on plain paper. Saves ink.
  • Text: For text-only documents, like letters or reports. Delivers high-quality text printing.
  • Text & Image: For documents that have both text and images, like newsletters.
  • Photo: For photos and graphics, when you want good quality with faster printing.
  • Best Photo: For photos or graphics, when you need highest quality printing.
  • For RPM technology select Photo RPM in the 'Advanced' menu.

    Macintosh:

Depending on the paper type you choose to print on, the selections will be limited to correspond to the paper type.

    Return to the index
    Q: What is RPM technology?

A: RPM (Resolution Performance Management) is Epson's technology for optimizing the placement of up to eight ink droplet sizes (six for 4-color printer models) on a grid up to 5760 dpi to deliver superior photo quality.

    Return to the index
Q: What is 5760 x 720 optimized dpi using RPM technology?

A: 5760 x 720 optimized dpi is the highest addressable resolution that yields superior image quality and performance while keeping input files to a manageable size.

    Return to the index
Q: What do you mean by manageable file sizes?

A: Epson printers typically need a file input size between 240 and 300 pixels per inch (ppi) to achieve maximum print quality.
An 8" x 10" photo at 240 ppi is approximately 13 MB. This is a manageable file size for most users.

    Return to the index
Q: How do I select 5760 x 720 Optimized DPI Using RPM technology?

A: From Advanced menu on the printer driver, select Photo RPM. This setting is not available for all media types. For printers that support 5760 x 720, select Super Microweave to achieve the highest print quality.

    Windows:

    Return to the index
Q: Does Epson recommend Photo RPM for printing everyday photos?

A: For most photos and other print tasks, we recommend the default print settings for the paper type users have selected. By using the default print settings, users achieve both excellent image quality and faster print speeds. With Microsoft Windows, simply select the print task (Text, Photo, etc.) and then the paper type (Matte paper, Glossy Photo paper, etc). The printer driver will automatically set the appropriate print settings. Photo RPM is available in the Advanced menu for those exceptional print tasks where image quality is the primary consideration.

    Return to the index
Q: What should I do if the printed image has horizontal banding?

A: Make sure you are using a compatible paper type. Verify the printable side of the paper is face up in the sheet feeder. Select your paper type in the printer driver menu and let the driver automatically set the print settings. Make sure the paper thickness lever is in the correct position for your paper type. Make sure your ink cartridges are not outdated. They should be replaced six months after installing them in the printer to ensure the ink is fresh.

If necessary, follow these steps to run the head cleaning utility and nozzle check:

    1. Make sure the printer is turned on but not printing, and the red Error light is off. (If the Error light is flashing or on, you may need to replace an ink cartridge)

    2. Windows:
Right-click the printer icon on your taskbar (in the lower right corner of your screen). Select Head Cleaning.

    Macintosh OS 8.5.1 to 9.x:
Open your application's File menu and choose Page Setup or Print. Click the Utility button, then click the Head Cleaning button.

    Macintosh OS X:
Open the Applications folder and double-click EPSON Printer Utility. Select C62 Series in the printer list, click OK, and select Head Cleaning.

    3. Follow the instructions on the screen to clean the print head. Cleaning takes about 30 seconds, during which the printer makes some noise and the green power light flashes.

Caution: Never turn off the printer while the power light is flashing, unless the printer hasn't moved or made noise for more than 5 minutes.

    4. When the green power light stops flashing, make sure plain paper is loaded in the printer. Then click Print nozzle check pattern (Windows) or Confirmation (Macintosh) and follow the on-screen directions to print a nozzle check.

    5. If the nozzle check pattern has no gaps in its lines, click Finish.

If the pattern has any gaps, click Clean to clean the print head again.

If you don't see any improvement after cleaning three or four times, check the solutions beginning on page 43 of your printer basics manual. You can also turn the printer off and wait overnight - this allows any dried ink to soften-and then try cleaning the print head again.

Q: The colors of my image on my monitor do not match the output from my printer. What is wrong?

A: First you must have an understanding of how color is produced. A monitor displays color by transmitting Red, Green and Blue (RGB) light into your eyes. A printer uses existing light to reflect Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and black (CYMK) light into your eyes. It is virtually impossible to have these two different color types (transmissive and reflective) match perfectly. Also, due to its transmissive nature, the monitor is able to display a much wider range of colors than a reflective product, such as a piece of paper with ink on it.

Most monitors are not calibrated for correct color display out of the box; they have to be calibrated to produce accurate colors. Adobe PhotoShop (not included) includes a basic monitor calibrator to do this; it is the Adobe Gamma utility. This utility is contained in the Control Panel in Windows and on the Macintosh.

Also, what type of color matching system (CMS) are you using when printing your image? The color matching system can greatly affect the output color of your image. For information on how to use the various color management system available, please check the CMS user documentation or the web site of the manufacturer.

To ensure that the images your Epson Color printer produces are as close as possible to the images displayed on your monitor you should do the following:

    Calibrate your monitor
Experiment with various Color Management Systems
Try using the ICM (Windows 95 or 98) or ColorSync (Macintosh) setting

To print a file saved in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) format with accurate colors, you first need to convert the file to RGB format. Your printer software automatically converts RGB files to your printer's 4-color CMYK format. To print with the correct colors, convert any CMYK-format input files to RGB format before printing. For the best results, create your original print files in the RGB color space.

    Return to the index
Q: The quality of my printed output is unacceptable. What can I do to improve this?

A: First, if you are using coated ink jet paper, verify that the printable side of the paper is face up, and check the type of paper being used. EPSON brand paper, which is designed for the Stylus C62 printer, delivers the best printed output. If your output is faint, check the printer driver to make sure you have selected a print resolution other than Economy.

The resolution of your image may also be too low. Increase the image resolution using your image-editing software, or decrease the size of the image. When scanning, scan at 240-300 dpi if you wish to print images at their actual size. If you intend to increase the size of the printed image, scan at a higher dpi.

Make sure the Media Type setting matches the paper or media loaded. Also, the Color Adjustment Mode options may be set incorrectly for your document type. Let the printer driver automatically select the settings for the best quality.

Verify that you are using the correct printer driver for your printer model.

Make sure your ink cartridges are not outdated. They should be replaced six months after installing them in the printer to ensure the ink is fresh.

Try testing the printer with another computer and cable. This will eliminate the possibility of a defective printer cable, or software issue. If you're still experiencing a problem, try replacing the ink cartridges with genuine EPSON ink cartridges.

Q: Nothing prints. What should I do?

A: Make sure the printer cable is securely connected to the printer and computer ports. Turn on the computer and try printing again. If the cable was not the issue try running a nozzle check. If the nozzle check works, try checking for and deleting any stalled print jobs.

    Return to the index
Q: The printer sounds like it is printing, but no ink is on the paper. What's wrong?

A: The print head nozzles may be clogged. From the Utility section found in the EPSON printer driver, clean the print heads by performing a head cleaning followed by printing a nozzle check pattern. A head cleaning and nozzle check must be performed as a cycle. After printing a nozzle check, examine the printed pattern. Each colored square should be solid, with no gaps or lines. If there are stripes, continue with another cycle. Perform up to 4 cycles if necessary. If the nozzle check is not printing completely, and if the head cleanings do not help the nozzle check pattern to print completely, try replacing the ink cartridge. Make sure your ink cartridges are not outdated. They should be replaced six months after installing them in the printer to ensure the ink is fresh.

    Return to the index
Q: My printouts are missing color and/or black print. How can I resolve this issue?

A: If the printer is printing blank pages, make sure you are using the correct printer driver and make sure the paper size is correctly selected in the driver. If the printer is printing black only, the "Ink" option in the printer driver may be set to "Black" instead of "Color" or a setting in the software may be set to print black only. Also, the print head nozzles may be clogged. Q: Why does the image look inverted, as if viewed in a mirror?

A: You may have accidentally used the "Flip Horizontal" option in the printer driver or a similar feature in your application. Turn off the setting in the printer driver and/or software application and try printing again.

    Return to the index
Q: Is there a printer self test to determine if a problem is caused by the printer?

A: You can run a printer operation check to determine whether the problem comes from the printer itself or some other source. If the results are satisfactory, the problem lies in your software settings, the interface cable, or your computer. Follow these steps to run the printer check:
    1. Make sure both the printer and computer are turned off.
    2. Disconnect the interface cable from the printer.
    3. Make sure paper is loaded in the printer.
    4. Hold down the Maintenance button, and turn on the printer.

Release the Maintenance button when a test page begins printing. The printer prints its ROM version number and a nozzle check pattern.

If the pattern has stripes, you need to clean the print head.

    5. To end the check, turn off the printer after it prints the check page. Then reconnect the interface cable and turn on your printer and computer. If the check page prints, the problem probably lies in your software settings, the interface cable, or your computer. If the check page doesn't print, you should contact EPSON technical support.

Q: Does the type of paper I use really make a difference?

A: The ink in this printer works great on inexpensive uncoated paper for your everyday printing needs.

For high quality printouts and for long lasting images such as photos, it is important to use genuine EPSON brand paper. EPSON brand paper has been specifically developed to be compatible with the ink formula used in EPSON printers.

Other brands of paper, which claim they can be used with all brands of ink jet printers, may not be compatible with the EPSON dye based inks. These papers may give you lower quality color images and will not have the longevity of EPSON's long lasting media. The ink also may not dry properly, because the ink doesn't bind properly to the media, causing smearing and pages sticking together.

Q: How do you select the correct media type in the printer software?

A: Your printer automatically adjusts itself for the type of paper you select in your printer software. That's why the Media Type setting is so important. It tells your printer what kind of paper you're using and adjusts the ink coverage accordingly. Before you print, always check your Media Type setting. Here are the settings you should choose for your paper:

Q: How should I preserve my pictures?

A: For optimum image quality and longer print life, print your photos with EPSON ink and EPSON's light-resistant Matte Paper - Heavyweight (S041257). EPSON Premium Glossy paper also offers improved lightfastness but is more susceptible to atmospheric contamination than Matte Paper - Heavyweight or EPSON Photo paper. Prints with other EPSON media are less fade-resistant but can be preserved if kept in a photo album.

As with all photos, care should be taken to preserve the long life of all your prints. All color dyes change over time. For storage in photo albums, we recommend acid-free, archival sleeves that are commonly available from camera shops and other retailers. For indoor display, we recommend avoiding direct sunlight and mounting prints under glass to help protect them from humidity, cigarette smoke, and other atmospheric contaminants. Color stability varies based on lighting conditions, color intensity, color range, and print media.

Q: Can I use sheet labels with this printer?

A: Yes, EPSON makes Photo Quality Self Adhesive Sheets (S041106). To avoid paper jams, only load one Photo Quality Self Adhesive Sheet at a time. Set the Media Type in the printer driver to the "Photo Quality Ink Jet Paper" setting.

Q: What is the correct way to load transparency paper?

A: It is recommended to use EPSON Ink Jet Transparency Paper (S041064). Before loading the transparency, place the included support sheet or a sheet of plain paper beneath the transparency (or beneath the stack of transparencies if you are loading more than one). You can load up to 10 transparencies at a time, but if you have more than one transparency loaded, the minimum top margin you can use is 1.2 inches. Also, you may get better results by loading one sheet at a time. Insert the transparency sheet making sure that the notch is at the top right side of the sheet. Remember to choose the correct Media Type setting in the printer driver software.

Q: How do I print on envelopes with this printer?

A: You can load up to 10 envelopes at a time. Load the envelopes short edge first against the right edge of the sheet feeder.

The printable side should be up, and the flap side should be down and on the left. Slide the left edge guide against them.

Move the thickness lever on the side of the printer to the envelope position. (Remember to move the thickness lever back to the normal position when you're done.)

Before you print, make these settings:
For Orientation, select Landscape (for OS X, select the middle icon in the Orientation section of the page setup dialog box).

For paper Type (Windows) or Media Type (Macintosh), select Plain Paper.
Choose the correct envelope size as the paper Size (Windows) or Paper Size (Macintosh).

The most common envelope size is Envelope #10.
