Start - Lets you scan directly to an application with one touch. You must set up the scanner monitor and a compatible application to use this button. See the EPSON TWAIN User's Guide for more information. Questions and Answers: Q. What's the difference between the Perfection 1200U, 1200U Photo and 1200S? A. The Perfection 1200U and 1200U Photo have a USB (Universal Serial Bus) port and come with a USB cable. There is no SCSI or parallel interface option. The Perfection 1200S has a high speed SCSI interface but no USB interface. The Perfection 1200U Photo comes standard with a Transparency Adapter which is optional with the other units. Q. Which operating systems can the Perfection 1200U and 1200S scanner be used with? A. The Perfection-1200U and 1200U Photo are compatible with Windows 98, iMac, and the new PowerMac G3. Windows 3.1/95 and NT are not supported. The Perfection-1200S is compatible with Windows 95/98/NT, and the PowerMac G3. Q. Does the same software bundle come with all Perfection 1200 models? A. No, the software bundle is the same with the Perfection 1200U and 1200S, but the Perfection 1200U Photo has an additional software application. Q. Where can I find all the software that is supposed to come with the scanner? A. The software is on the CD's that come with the scanner. Before you begin, check the CD-ROM label to make sure you have the correct CD-ROM for your operating system. If You're Running Windows, make sure Windows is running and any virus protection programs are turned off. The EPSON Perfection CD-ROM for Windows should be in your CD-ROM drive and the Main Menu should be on your screen. If you don't see the Main Menu, click Start and Run. At the prompt, type D:\EPSON (where D is your CD-ROM drive letter); then click OK. Q. The OneTouch feature is not working with my scanning program. A. The one touch function only works with programs that are OneTouch compliant, like Presto Pagemanager and Windows 98 Imaging. These applications support linking scanner events with the Start button on Windows 98 and enable the scanner monitor utility. For details on how to set up one-touch scanning, see "Using the Start Button" in your EPSON TWAIN User's Guide. Q. I only received a booklet called "Scanner Basics" with my scanner. Should there not be another booklet with more detailed explanations on how to use the scanner? A. Just run EPSON.EXE on your scanner software CD-ROM and click the Electronic Documentation link from the main menu screen. If you already have Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 on your system, the manual opens in Acrobat Reader automatically. If you don't have Acrobat Reader, it is automatically installed from the CD-ROM and then the manual you selected opens. Your scanner software CD-ROM includes the following manuals: EPSON TWAIN User's Guide (twain.pdf) Adobe PhotoDeluxe Business Edition User's Guide (Windows, PhotoDeluxe.pdf) Adobe PhotoDeluxe 2.0 User's Guide (iMac, PhotoDeluxe.pdf) NewSoft Presto! PageManager User's Guide (PageManager.pdf) Broderbund The Print Shop PressWriter User's Guide (PressWriter.pdf) ArcSoft PhotoPrinter (PhotoPrint.pdf) Q: The Operate light does not come on. A: Make sure the power cable is correctly plugged into the scanner and the power outlet. Make sure the outlet is operational and is not connected to a timer or switch. Q. Does the Perfection 1200U use the same optional Automatic Document Feeder and Transparency Unit as the Perfection 1200S? A. The Automatic Document Feeder and Transparency Unit for the Perfection-1200S and Perfection-1200U are the same and will work on both scanners. The Transparency unit and Automatic Document Feeder are removeable and can be taken off when not needed. Q. What sizes of film and slides is the optional transparency unit able to scan? A. The optional transparency unit accomodates negative and positive transparencies up to 4" x 5" comes with film holders for the following film sizes: 35mm film, Brownie size (2.4" x 3.5") and 4" x 5" film. Q: My scanner software doesn't work properly. A: Check your system requirements. See if the system requirements, such as the operating system version, are correct for your software. Check your computer's memory. See if the computer has enough memory for your software. If you're running other software at the same time, using RAM resident programs, or have many device drivers, the computer may not have enough memory. (See your software and computer manuals.) If you are scanning a large image or scanning at a high resolution, your computer may not have enough memory to process the image. Check your software installation. Make sure that your software is correctly installed and set up. If all else fails, uninstall your software, then reinstall it. Q: My system doesn't recognize the USB port (Windows only). A: The USB interface is not supported by Windows 95 (including OSR-2.x) or Windows NT. You must have Windows 98. The scanner must be connected to a built-in (root) hub or first tier hub only. If the scanner is attached to a built-in root hub and the scanner isn't recognized, check the computer's user manual and to see if the USB port needs to be enabled in the computer's setup. If the scanner is attached to a first tier hub, that hub must be self-powered (ie: an AC adapter should be attached). Q: Can the Perfection 1200U be turned off? The system hangs up (Windows only) when I turn the scanner off. A: Yes, the Perfection 1200U can be turned off while the computer is on. Because USB is Plug and Play, the system will find the scanner when it is reconnected and powered on. If your system hangs after turning off the scanner, try disabling Event Monitoring in Scanners and Cameras first. Q. The lamp in my scanner stays on all the time. Is this normal? A. Yes, this is normal. The lamp stays on as long as the scanner is turned on. The lamp's expected life is 10000 hrs. The life expectancy is five (5) years based on the following usage formula: 8 hrs x 20 days x 12 mo To conserve the life of the lamp, the scanner can be turned off when not in use. Q: How do I reinstall the scanner software? A: 1. Insert your scanner CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive. 2. (Windows) Click Start and Run. At the prompt, type D:\EPSON (where D is your CD-ROM drive letter); then click OK. (Macintosh) Double-click the EPSON Installer icon. 3. At the Main Menu, select Re-install Scanner Software. Note: If you are using a Macintosh, you must uninstall EPSON TWAIN before reinstalling it. Q: Can the Perfection 1200U scanner be disconnected from the computer after installing the scanner software (Macintosh only)? A: The scanner monitor searches for the Perfection 1200U during start up and may cause your system to hang if it does not find it. Do not disconnect your scanner unless you disable the EPSON Scanner Monitor extension in the Extensions folder. Q: Who do I contact for Technical Support of the Software that came with my scanner?
