    Product Controls: Stylus C42

Power Button - Turns power on and off. It is important to use the printer's Power button rather than a power strip to control power to the printer.

Cleaning Cycle - Make sure the printer is turned on but not printing, and the red error light is off. Press and hold the maintenance button for five seconds. Cleaning takes about 30 seconds, during which the printer makes some noise and the power light flashes. When the cleaning cycle is complete, the power light will stop flashing.

Printer's Nozzle Check Pattern - You can run a printer nozzle check to see if the print head needs cleaning. It also helps to determine whether a problem is in the printer or external to the printer.

  • Make sure both the printer and computer are turned off. Then disconnect the interface cable from the printer.
  • Make sure letter-size paper is loaded in the printer.
  • Hold down the Maintenance button and turn on the printer. Continue holding down the Maintenance button until the Power light starts to flash, then release it.
  • The printer prints one page showing its ROM version number, ink counter, and a nozzle check pattern. Each black and colored block pattern should be complete, with no stripes running through it. If the printed blocks have stripes, you need to clean the print head.
  • To end the check, turn off the printer after it prints the check page. Then reconnect the interface cable and turn on your printer and computer.
  • If the check page prints, the problem probably lies in your software settings, the interface cable, or your computer. If the check page doesn't print, you may have a problem with your printer.

    General Printer Questions and Answers

Q: How does Micro Piezo technology compare to thermal technology?

A: Epson's Micro Piezo (M.P.) technology outperforms thermal technologies in all areas: pressure method - electromechanical (M.P.) vs. boiling (thermal), print head life - permanent (M.P.) vs. disposable (thermal), ink flexibility range - wide (M.P.) vs. limited (thermal), potential for improvement - significant (M.P.) vs. limited (thermal). Micro Piezo technology provides the highest resolution, smallest dot size, precise dot volume, precise dot shape, precise dot placement, and fastest head firing times. Thermal technology creates satellites and misting which Micro Piezo technology eliminates.

Q: What steps need to be taken when transporting the Printer?

A: If you move your printer some distance, you need to prepare it for transportation in its original box or one of a similar size. To avoid damage, always leave the ink cartridges installed when transporting the printer. Be sure to remove the tape used in step 4 after installing the printer in its new location.

    Follow these steps:
    1. Turn on the printer, wait until the print head locks in the far right position, then turn off the printer.
    2. Unplug the power cord from the electrical outlet. Then disconnect the printer cable from the printer.
    3. Remove any paper from the printer and remove the paper support.
    4. Open the printer cover. Secure the ink cartridge holder to the printer with tape, then close the printer cover.
    5. Push in the output tray extension and close the tray.
    6. If possible, repack the printer and attachments in the original box using the protective materials that came with it. See the Start Here sheet. Be sure to keep the printer level as you transport it. After transporting the printer, carefully remove the tape securing the print head and then print a document to test the output. If you notice a decline in print quality, clean the print head; if output is misaligned, align the print head.

Q: Can the Epson ink cartridges be refilled or can 3rd party ink cartridges be used without voiding the warranty?

A: EPSON does not recommend refilling or using 3rd party ink cartridges. Using these products will not void the product's original warranty, however, if these 3rd party products cause a failure, the repair of that failure will not be covered under warranty.

    Return to the index
Q: How do I know when the ink cartridges need to be replaced?

A: When the printer's red Error light flashes, an ink cartridge is low on ink. This is a good time to make sure you have a new cartridge handy. When the Error light stays on, the cartridge is empty and will need to be replaced. The Error light also flashes when there is a paper jam, so make sure you check your paper before changing the ink cartridge.

To check your ink supply, do one of the following:
Windows: You can either double-click the printer icon on your taskbar or double-click the ink monitor icon to display the ink levels remaining.

Macintosh 9.x or earlier: Open the File menu and choose Print. Click the Ink icon. You'll see a window showing the ink remaining in each cartridge.

Macintosh OS X: Double-click the Applications folder on your hard drive. Double-click EPSON Printer Utility, select the C42 Series printer in the Printer List window and click OK. Then click the EPSON StatusMonitor button. You'll see a window showing the ink remaining in each cartridge.

Q: How do I replace an ink cartridge when an ink low or out condition occurs?

A: Make sure you have a new ink cartridge before starting the replacement process.

  • The printer should be on but not printing (the green Power light should be on, but not flashing).
  • Raise the printer cover, then press down the Maintenance button for six seconds. The print head moves to the cartridge replacement position.
  • If both cartridges need replacing, the print head moves to the black cartridge position first.
  • The black cartridge is on the left, and the color cartridge is on the right.
  • Pull up the empty ink cartridge clamp and remove the cartridge.
  • Unwrap the new ink cartridge, being careful not to touch the green chip on the front of the cartridge. Remove ONLY the yellow tape seal from the top of the cartridge. If you remove anything but the yellow seal you cannot use the cartridge or it will damage the printer. You must remove the yellow tape from the top of the cartridge or you will permanently damage it.
  • Insert the new cartridge and press down firmly on the clamp. Make sure the clamp is closed completely.
  • If the other cartridge needs to be replaced, the print head moves into the loading position. Repeat the steps to install the second cartridge.
  • After installing the ink cartridge press the Maintenance button to begin charging the ink delivery system. Charging takes about 30 seconds and is complete when the power light stops flashing and the error light goes out. For more information on installing an ink cartridge please refer to the Start Here Poster or your Printer Basics Manual.

If the red Error light remains on and the printer continues to make noise for more than five minutes, open the printer cover and press the Power button to turn the printer off. Then make sure that the ink cartridge clamps are completely closed. Close the printer cover and turn the printer on then press the maintenance button to finish the ink charging. If that doesn't work contact Epson technical support for assistance.

Q: How long should an ink cartridge remain in the printer if it's not used often.

A: When an installed ink cartridge is more than six (6) months old, you may need to replace it if you notice that your printouts don't look as good as they used to. If print quality doesn't improve after cleaning and aligning the print head, you should replace one or both cartridges.

Q: Can I print in black, if the color cartridge is empty or visa versa?

A: You cannot print if either ink cartridge is empty. Leave the empty cartridge installed in the printer until you have obtained a replacement, otherwise the ink remaining in the print head nozzles may dry out. It's best to always have an extra cartridge on hand.

Q: The colors of my image on my monitor do not match the output from my printer. What is wrong?

A: First you must have an understanding of how color is produced. A monitor displays color by transmitting Red, Green and Blue (RGB) light into your eyes. A printer uses existing light to reflect Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and blacK (CYMK) light into your eyes. It is virtually impossible to have these two different color types (transmissive and reflective) to match perfectly. Also, due to its transmissive nature, the monitor is able to display a much wider range of colors than a reflective product, such as a piece of paper with ink on it.

Most monitors are not calibrated for correct color display out of the box, they have to be calibrated to produce accurate colors. Adobe PhotoShop includes a basic monitor calibrator to do this; it is the Adobe Gamma utility. This utility is contained in the Control Panel in Windows and on the Macintosh. Some of the higher-end monitor calibrators use a suction cup device that sticks on the monitor and reads a range of colors displayed on the monitor. These hardware/software combination devices create much more accurate color profiles than the strictly software solutions.

What type of color matching system (CMS) are you using when printing your image? The color matching system can greatly affect the output color of your image. For information on how to use the various color management system available, please check the CMS user documentation or the web site of the manufacturer.

To ensure that the images your Epson Color printer produces are as close as possible to the images displayed on your monitor you should do the following:

    Calibrate your monitor
Experiment with various Color Management Systems
Try using the ICM (Windows 95 or 98) or ColorSync (Macintosh) setting

Q: The quality of my printed output is unacceptable. What can I do to improve this?

A: First verify that you are using the correct printer driver for your printer model. If MicroWeave is off in the advanced settings, turn this feature on. If High Speed is on, turn it off. Make sure the Media Type setting matches the paper or media loaded. The Halftoning and Color Adjustment Mode options may be set incorrectly for your document type. Let the printer driver automatically select the settings for the best quality.

Verify that the printable side of the paper is face up, and check the type of paper being used. EPSON brand paper, which is specifically designed for the Stylus ink jet series of printers, delivers the best-printed output. If your output is faint, check the printer driver to make sure you have selected a print resolution other than Economy.

The size or pixel resolution of your original image file may be too low. Try reducing the size of your printed image or using a higher resolution original image. A low resolution picture might look great on your display but will not look good when printed.

Also, try testing the printer with another computer. This will eliminate the possibility of a defective printer cable, or software issue. If you're still experiencing a problem, try replacing the ink cartridge and make sure you are using genuine EPSON ink cartridges.

Q: Vertical lines are not aligned or vertical banding appears. How can I correct this?

A: Your printer must be connected directly to your computer (not over a network) to use the Print Head Alignment utility.

Load plain paper that's at least 8.27 inches (210 mm) wide to prevent ink from spraying inside the printer and smudging your printouts.

    1. Make sure the printer is turned on, but not printing, and letter-size plain paper is loaded.

    2. Do one of the following:

Windows: Right-click the printer icon on your taskbar (in the lower right corner of your screen) and select Print Head Alignment.

Macintosh 9.x or earlier: Open the File menu and choose Page Setup or Print. Then click the Utility button. In the Utility menu, click the Print Head Alignment button.

Macintosh OS X: Double-click the Applications folder on your hard drive. Double-click EPSON Printer Utility, select the C42 Series printer in the Printer List window, and click OK. Then click the Print Head Alignment button.

    3. Follow the instructions on the screen to print a test page.

    4. On the printed page, select the pattern that shows the two vertical lines most precisely printed on top of each other. You may need to use a magnifying glass. Select one pattern each for rows 1, 2, and 3. Then enter the number of the best pattern for each row in the corresponding boxes on the screen.

Q: What error conditions are indicated by the printer's lights?

A: Please refer to the following table for error conditions:

    Lights Possible Cause
Why is the Green Power light flashing? The printer is receiving a print job, replacing an ink cartridge, charging ink, or cleaning the print head.
Why is the Red Error light on? Your paper ran out, ink ran out, or paper is jammed. You may also see a message on your screen.
    - If paper is out, load more paper, then press the Maintenance button to resume printing.
    - If paper is jammed, press the Maintenance button to eject the paper. If that doesn't work, turn off the printer, open the cover, and pull the paper out from the front, including any torn pieces. Then turn on the printer, reload paper, and press the Maintenance button.
    - If you see an ink out message on your screen, you need to replace one of your ink cartridges.
Why is the Red Error light flashing? One of the ink cartridges is low. Make sure you have a replacement cartridge. To determine which cartridge is low, check the ink level.
Why is the Green Power light off and the red Error light on? Paper may be blocking movement of the print head. Turn off the printer, open the cover, and remove any jammed paper or other foreign objects. Then turn the printer on again. If the lights are still on, contact your dealer or EPSON.
Why are the Green Power light and red Error light flashing? The printer may have an internal error. Turn off the printer, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again. If the lights are still flashing, contact your dealer or EPSON.
Why is the Green Power light on and red Error light on after installing an ink cartridge? One of your ink cartridges is installed incorrectly. Remove and reinstall the cartridge.

    Return to the index
Q: Is there a printer self test to determine if a problem is caused by the printer?

A: You can run a self test on the printer to determine whether a problem comes from the printer or some other source. Follow these steps to run the printer check:

    1. Make sure both the printer and computer are turned off.
    2. Disconnect the interface cable from the printer.
    3. Make sure paper is loaded in the printer.
    4. Hold down the Load/Eject button, then press and release the power button. Continue holding down the Load/Eject button until the power light starts to flash, then release it. The printer prints one page showing its ROM version number, ink counter, and a nozzle check pattern. If the pattern has gaps in its dots, you need to clean the print head.
    5. To end the check, turn off the printer after it prints the check page. Then reconnect the interface cable and turn on your printer and computer. If the check page prints, the problem probably lies in your software settings, the interface cable, or your computer. If the check page doesn't print, you should contact EPSON technical support.

Q: How should I preserve my pictures?

A: For optimum image quality and longer print life, print your photos with EPSON ink and EPSON's light-resistant Matte Paper - Heavyweight (S041257). EPSON Premium Glossy paper also offers improved lightfastness but is more susceptible to atmospheric contamination than Matte Paper - Heavyweight or EPSON Photo paper.
Prints with other EPSON media are less fade-resistant but can be preserved if kept in a photo album. As with all photos, care should be taken to preserve the long life of all your prints. All color dyes change over time. For storage in photo albums, we recommend acid-free, archival sleeves that are commonly available from camera shops and other retailers.
For indoor display, we recommend avoiding direct sunlight and mounting prints under glass to help protect them from humidity, cigarette smoke, and other atmospheric contaminants. Color stability varies based on lighting conditions, color intensity, color range, and print media.
