This section explains some EPSON Scan's features that you can use to scan images cleanly.

Remove dust and scratches on film and slides

Dust Removal
Dust Removal is a scanner software feature that removes the appearance of dust in film or slide scans.

The following table lists document types supported by Dust Removal.

Note:
If you scan film or slides that do not contain any dust or scratches using Dust Removal, the scanned image may be distorted or blurred.

Follow the steps below to remove dust using Dust Removal in Professional Mode.

Place your film or slides on the document table.
Using the Film Holder

Note:
You can use the Dust Removal feature only for scanning film or slides.

Start EPSON Scan and then select Professional Mode. For details on how to select the scanning mode, see Changing the Scanning Mode.

The following window appears.

Specify the Original and Destination settings to match your film. Be sure to select Film for the Document Type.

Click Preview to preview the images.

Specify the Target Size and make adjustments using the image quality adjustment tools, if necessary.

Select the Dust Removal check box.

Click Scan. EPSON Scan starts scanning.

Dust on the film or slides is removed from the scanned images.

Note:
The result of the Dust Removal feature does not appear in the previewed image.

The scanned images are sent to the application or saved to the specified folder.

Remove grain from scanned images

When grain appears in scanned images, select the Grain Reduction check box to reduce it. Selecting a higher Grain Reduction level makes the scanned image softer.

The images above are for demonstration only. The actual result of Grain Reduction may differ depending on the image or film type you scan.

Restore color in faded images

Color Restoration restores color in scans of faded films and photos.

Note:
Depending on the condition of film or photos, color may not be fully restorable.

Follow the steps below to restore color using Color Restoration in Professional Mode.

Place your photo, film, or slides on the document table.

Start EPSON Scan and then select Professional Mode. For details on how to select the scanning mode, see Changing the Scanning Mode.

The following window appears.

Specify the Original and Destination settings to match your document.

Note:
  • When scanning film, do not select B&W Negative Film for the Film Type.
  • Do not specify 16-bit Grayscale or 8-bit Grayscale for the Image Type.

Click Preview to preview the images.

Specify the Target Size and make adjustments using the image quality adjustment tools, if necessary.

Select the Color Restoration check box.

The restored color is displayed on the previewed image.

Click Scan. EPSON Scan starts scanning.

The scanned images are sent to the application or saved to the specified folder.

Enhance the quality of the scanned image (PRINT Image Matching)

PRINT Image Matching is a standardized method of recording a wider range of color information to enhance the quality of your scanned images.

Note:
PRINT Image Matching information does not change the image data or the way the image is displayed on a computer screen.

Follow the steps below to enhance the quality of your scanned images using EPSON Smart Panel.

Start EPSON Smart Panel.

EPSON Smart Panel starts and the following window appears.

Click the Scan and Save icon.

Specify Location, File Name, and Image Format settings. Select Print Image Matching II (JPEG) or Print Image Matching II (TIFF) from the Type list box, and change the Photo Scene setting, if necessary.

Click Scan and Save to start scanning or Scan with Options to change scanning settings.
