Diagnosing Problems


LCD Messages

You can diagnose and solve most problems by checking the messages on the LCD screen and trying the recommended solutions.

LCD message
Cause
Solution

Empty ink cartridge.
Change the empty ink cartridges. See Removing and Installing Ink Cartridges.

The ink cartridge is not installed or not installed correctly.
Install the ink cartridge correctly. See Removing and Installing Ink Cartridges.

No paper is loaded in the sheet feeder.
Load paper in the sheet feeder. Then press  Start to continue or  Stop/Clear Settings to cancel.

Paper is jammed.
Clear the jam, then press  Start See Paper Feeding Problems to clear the paper jam.

The index sheet was not recognized because it is not positioned correctly.
Position the index sheet correctly on the document table, aligning the top of it with the left edge of the glass. Then press  Start to continue or  Stop/Clear Settings to cancel. See your Basics Guide for details.

The index sheet is marked incorrectly.
Remove the index sheet, mark it correctly, and try again. See your Basics Guide for details.

The index sheet does not match the photos on the memory card.
Remove the memory card and insert the card used to print the index sheet-or place the correct index sheet on the document table. Then press  Start to continue or  Stop/Clear Settings to cancel. See your Basics Guide for details.

An error occurred during photo pre-scanning.
Check that the photo is placed correctly and try again. See Placing Originals for Scanning.

An error occurred during film pre-scanning.
Check that the film is placed correctly and try again. See your Basics Guide for details.

Not enough ink to perform head cleaning.
Replace with new ink cartridges. See Removing and Installing Ink Cartridges.

There is a problem with the Epson Stylus CX7800.
Turn the Epson Stylus CX7800 off and then back on. If the error does not clear, contact Epson as described in Where To Get Help.

A part on the Epson Stylus CX7800 needs to be replaced.
Contact Epson as described in Where To Get Help.

The waste ink pad is nearly full.
Contact Epson as described in Where To Get Help.

The memory card does not contain any valid photos.
Remove the memory card and see your Basics Guide.

Memory card error.
Remove the memory card and see the compatibility table in your Basics Guide for details.

The connected camera is not recognized.
Check the connection and try again. See your Basics Guide for details.

The paper thickness lever is set to the wrong position.
Set the paper thickness lever to the correct position and try again. See Loading Paper.

No memory card is inserted.
Insert a valid memory card and try again. See your Basics Guide for details.

Running a Printer Check

You can run a printer check to determine whether a problem comes from the Epson Stylus CX7800 itself or some other source.

  1. Make sure both the Epson Stylus CX7800 and computer are turned off. Then disconnect the USB cable from the Epson Stylus CX7800.
  2. Make sure letter-size plain paper is loaded in the Epson Stylus CX7800.
  3. Press the  On button to turn on the Epson Stylus CX7800.
  4. Press the Setup/Utilities button to enter the setup mode.
  5. Press the  or  Photo/Options button to select Check Ink Nozzles.
  6. The Epson Stylus CX7800 turns on and prints a test pattern:



  7. Turn off the Epson Stylus CX7800 after it prints the test page. Then reconnect the USB cable and turn on the Epson Stylus CX7800 and computer.
    • If the test page prints, the problem probably lies in your software settings, the USB cable, or your computer. It's also possible that your software may not be installed correctly. See your Start Here sheet for instructions on reinstalling the Epson Stylus CX7800 software.
    • If the test page doesn't print satisfactorily (for example, if bands appear in the check pattern), try Cleaning the Print Head or Aligning the Print Head.
    • If the test page doesn't print, you may have a problem with the Epson Stylus CX7800. Try the suggestions in Problems and Solutions. If nothing works, contact Epson as described in Where To Get Help.
